Newcastle leads the way on rare disease research!

This was front page news in my local paper on Saturday. Experts in Newcastle
will lead 70 research centres across Europe in a programme to find new treatments
for rare diseases. This £32m EU programme will include looking at Spinocerebellar
Ataxia.

I don't know if this is the same thing but it was announced here (in Israel) that the Hebrew University and other institutions are part of an an enormous EU-funded, billion euro. ten year brain research endeavor, which will include ways to tackle various brain illnesses such as Alzheimers and Parkinson's. I did not see any mention of CA but it ciuld have been mentioned.. It would be nice if one of these projects, annouced periodically, would actually come up with something cocrete for once and in our lifetimes!!! Neta

Hi Neta,
It does appear to be the same project, doesn't it. I'll look for the link to the
website if you would like to read the article. I was heartened to see that
Spinocerebellar Ataxia was specifically mentioned. Today on TV I heard
Bill Gates say there would be good news about Polio eradication within
2yrs, a cause he's championing. As you say it would be wonderful if an
answer was found in our lifetime for SCA.

Check out the NYTimes site in the health or science section. With all this researcg going on, I think it's time to push a bit. N
